What 340 Upvotes Taught Me About Launching for Filipino Users

Juan Miguel dela Cruz · Jul 8, 2026 · 6 min read

When we launched Biyahe, I expected a quiet week and maybe fifty visitors from my Facebook friends. Instead, the community here pushed us past three hundred upvotes and, more importantly, sent us over a hundred pieces of feedback in seven days. This post is my attempt to pay that forward.

The single biggest lesson: launch where your users already complain. Before writing a line of code, I spent weekends sa mga terminal listening to commuters. The complaints were consistent — walang alam ang mga mapa sa reroutes, at ang fare matrices ay parang state secrets. Our launch copy quoted those complaints word for word, and people recognized themselves immediately.

What flopped? Our referral program. We spent two weeks building a points system nobody touched. Filipino users shared the app anyway — hindi dahil sa points, kundi dahil gusto nilang tulungan ang kapwa commuter. The bayanihan instinct is stronger than any gamification, and cheaper too.

On monetization: we went freemium with city packs, and the early numbers say provincial users convert better than Metro Manila users. My theory is that the app solves a sharper pain outside NCR, where transit information is even scarcer. Do not assume the capital is your best market.

Finally, a note on feedback culture. Filipino users are famously polite — hindi ka nila sasabihan na pangit ang app mo. You have to read between the lines: the feature they gently ask about twice is the feature that is broken. Salamat sa lahat ng nag-upvote, at sa mga hindi pa — try niyo, libre naman.
